Melting Chocolate… in the crock-pot!

Oh yes, its gloriously possible!

Melted chocolate… in the crock-pot! Let’s do this!

chocolate peppermint birds nest candy in crockpot
If you’ve ever tried melting chocolate in a double broiler or even in the microwave, you’ve probably experienced a burning incident or ten two.  Seriously, it seems like if you even look away for a split second while melting and stirring, you can kiss your lush white or dark chocolate goodbye.  So naturally, when I read this tip on myrecipe.com, I about fell out of my chair!  I couldn’t resist testing it out and seeing if I could indeed toss chocolate in my crock pot, walk away, and return 2 hours later to hot, melty amazingness.

Chocolate Peppermint Birds’ Nests

Whats in it?
8oz of dark chocolate melts [Merckens brand rocks!]
8oz of unsalted, dry roasted peanuts
a handful of raw, unsalted almonds
a handful of lightly salted pretzel rods
crushed candy cane

I ran out of PB filled pretzels making my white chocolate snack mix but by all means, hunt some down and add them to the mix too!  I’ve already added them to my grocery list.  Possibly for the next 5 lists.  Just sayin.

Toss it in your crock pot!

Add everything but the candy cane into your slow cooker and turn the heat to low.  Pop in a movie, fix yourself dinner or go for a run, and in an hour or so you’ll have a melty crockpot full of candy.  Stir to incorporate and add spoonfuls onto parchment paper to cool + harden.  Sprinkle crushed candy cane on top and leave them out for santa with a glass of milk or gift them to your friends!

Have you heard of this trick before?  If so… why didn’t you tell me!!?

  • Same cleanup as with any crockpot meal! Hot soapy water works best on rinsing the chocolate from it. I just filled mine with hot water and dawn, popped on the lid and set it inside the sink, and then dealt with it the following morning =) it cleaned up perfectly with no scrubbing =)

    Merry Christmas doll! MWAH!

  • How have I not heard about this before??  I LOVE my crockpot!  I don’t know why I never thought of melting chocolate in it!  Is it difficult to clean after?  Or is it no worse than any other crockpot meal?  Thanks for the idea, girl! 🙂

OK, I tried to make your AWESOME GORGEOUS cookie cutter chocolate treats.  And – while the end result was pretty awesome and gorgeous – I made SUCH a mess.  It was a disaster.  I had chocolate everywhere, candy canes stuck in my hair…honestly, I need you to come give me lessons.  Ha!

  • Mmm. So delicious and so easy!!! I might try this for Christmas dessert if I remember. I forget things easily!!!

  • Ann Chiappetta

Thanks for the Tip.  Making the last of Christmas Goodies today so I will definitely try.

  • I’ve burned chocolate in the microwave 4327842 times. And guess how many times I’ve used my crock pot? 0 times. Haha. Think of all the poor chocolate that went to waste! So sad. But thanks to you, no longer.  Love this idea!! xoxo

My friend’s family has something special every night of Chanukah.  She said this year they will do fondue one night.  I will have to share this with her!  I am hoping to buy a crock pot this week so maybe I will right a post with this and other slow cooker posts I’ve read recently, like Happy Herbivore’s beans.

  • I’ve never heard of this but it’s brilliant!
I’m getting a Crockpot for Christmas and I cannot wait. I have an entire list of things that I’m preparing to make with it. Between that, the juicer, and the food processor that I’m getting- I’m going to be in kitchen heaven! (Obviously I picked out the majority of my presents! lol)

  • Viviane Bauquet Farre

Wonderful! I love seeing all of the chocolate treats people concoct this time of year and these are great. Perfect for making festive desserts!

  • I really do need a smaller crockpot for this kind of thing. God knows I’m always holding my breath when it comes to melting chocolate. A few mishaps have happened in recent years…

  • I have a mini crock pot (the size you get free when you buy a big one) that some lame relative gave us as a wedding gift.  But it may be perfect for chocolate melting.
