A Very Snack-y What I Ate Wednesday

Morning loves!  Happy What I Ate Wednesday!

My day of eats this week is a prime example of the snack-a-thons that ensue when my darling little chickpea decides to make me feel like crap all day.  *cue singing* “This is the plague that never ends!  Yes it goes on and on, my friends!”  I envy those of you with easy pregnancies, I really do.  Thankfully I’ve been well enough to eat, and that merits a happy dance all on it’s own.  Since large meals only make me feel worse, I’ve been trying to snack my way to a balanced day’s worth of eats.  It’s not always perfect, but it’s pretty darn yummy!

I’ve been loving Food for Life’s Ezekiel 4:9 Flax Sprouted Whole Grain Bread which I was lucky enough to try free samples of.  I’ve been on the Ezekiel bread bandwagon for a few years [their cinnamon raisin wg bread is life changing-ly delicious!] and this just further solidified my love for the brand.  You’ve probably seen a bajillion shots of this bread slathered in peanut butter and bananas on my Instagram account and it’s safe to say you haven’t seen the last of it.  I’m still carb-crushing in a major way and feel much better about eating nutty whole grain breads versus eating the plain, white french and sourdough loafs my husband scarfs on a daily basis.

I’ll willingly eat both, but prefer the nutritional benefits of  more balanced grains, like this bread.  The nuttiness of the flax bread is a PERFECT vessel for nut butter and bananas.  Though I’ve been told by other bloggers I need to take it to the next level and drizzle honey on top too.  I’ll have to try it!  Thanks Food for Life!

Yeah um….. this whole snacking thing is fun and all but… I need a revamp! When I eat full meals I base them around veggies, so I get LOTS within a day.  When I snack all day?  It seems that veggies and protein take a backseat, or at least they did this time.  I snuck a few veggies in my juice, in the muffins, and my irish nachos were pretty veggie-riffic but it wasn’t quite what I’m used to getting.  Protein was essentially M.I.A. for the day aside from the cheese and nut butter.  Crap.  Tomorrow is another day right?  I’m thinking a big crisp salad with a sweet potato chickpea burger is in order.  To those of you wondering why I still do WIAW every week: this is exactly why! I can see where my diet is lacking and pick up the slack before I wind up falling deeper into a pattern or rut.  Judging by the food groups snubbed by my recent snacking, I’m shifting my focus to small, complete meals with added veggies and protein!  And if more of my beloved peanut butter-banana-coconut-bread/muffin combo finds it’s way into my face?  No complaints here.

LOVE that Ezekiel bread! [I think my W.I.A.W. post last week was a devotional to it, if I remember correctly.] It makes me happy that you crave pickles as a pregnant lady. Just saying.

I feel similarly about snacking all day. It makes it hard for me to gauge what I’ve eaten and where I’m lacking.

Awww, I LOVE that you’re calling him/her (not an “it”) a chickpea! How cute! And I love the look of that juice! Can’t believe when I went on my juicing kick last summer, I never thought to juice pineapple! Well…I just HAPPEN to have bought one the other day so I’m thinking some pineapple, strawberry, carrot juice might have to go down (literally…lol) today! 😉

Carrots are the best veggies for juicing…so sweet! I love doing carrot, apple (or pear), and lemon…add a little fresh ginger and maybe it’ll calm the “plague” a bit!

My preggo cravings are out of control. I’ve been wanting corn dogs for the last 2 weeks (PS – I think I’ve had a corn dog once when I was 7 years old), so I made mini corn dog muffins over the weekend. I’ve been snacking on those throughout the week! Not quite as healthy as you. 😉

I about laughed out loud when I read that you described your juice as radioactive. I’ve been drinking green juice in the morning lately and amazed at the bright green in comes out every time. The “recipe” I’ve been using for juice is banana, green apples, kale, parsley and frozen strawberries.


Ok, I do too snack too much. Like TOO much. But your snacks at least are so gorgeous looking and healthy.. Like I’d kill for that juice. Seriously!


The juice looks amaze! I love beets in any form, yum! Good for you for sticking with a balanced diet even though it’s tough right now, I can only imagine. Hang in there & keep snacking 🙂

So no WIAW post for me today 🙁 but I do have a juice combo for you! We offer this one where I work, it’s the best (and the bestseller :-P): kale, cucumber, pear, celery, lemon. It’s surprisingly mild, even newbie juice peoples love it! Another favorite of mine is ABC juice: apple beet carrot. I like to add ginger for a bit of spice. It’s sweet, but not quite as much as pure fruit juice, and makes your insides feel awesome.

Also – I think I *need* to try that flax bread. I usually just buy original Ezekiel bread, I’m interested to know how the flax version compares!


Your juice looks so good. I am stuck on a plane would love a glass of this.

I used to wonder why the heck people juice (I was like um eat the fruit and veggies instead?) and then one of my educated friends told me that more of the vitamins are available when separated from the fiber. SO I am coming around to the whole juicing thing. That radioactive stuff looks GOOD!

They may be “snacky” foods, but everything looks so good! Good point on not getting as many veggies when eating smaller snack type meals. I think I do the same thing.

Oh my gosh..you eat amazingly well for being pregnant. If you saw my (non existent food log) from my three pregnancy..Not good. Anyhow, live and learn. My favorite juice ingredient? Beets! And ginger! If you are suffering from sort of stomach problems, throw in a good knob of fresh ginger! And beets are great for iron which I was always sorely lacking in when pregnant. Good luck and stick to your great diet! You are doing an amazing job!

I’m a complete carb addict and I also happen to love snacks. Sometimes I prefer a round of appetizers or tapas to the whole meal, so all of your snacks look delicious, even with the missing protein and veg.

Well, considering I snack my way through al my non-pregant days, this is looking pretty darn good to me! And has made me want to pull my juicer out the cabinet it was relegated to in the fall…


I hope the sick-y feeling subsides soon!
I have been juicing daily for about six months- i started with 50%veg and am now close to 90%! A no fail way to take the edge off is with fresh ginger and lemon, the ginger will also help settle your tummy. I use 3 big carrots, 5 big kale leaves, half a cucumber, a lemon (no rind!), and small chunk ginger, sometimes with a small apple too


ah! Congrats on your peanut to be! Sorry you’re feeling yucky :(. You eat such pretty meals! You inspire me to make my food look yummier 😉

Hello Darling! I didn’t read through all the comments, so not sure if anyone has addressed this with regards to beets and juicing, but some people can experience rather sudden and extreme gastrointestinal distress from juiced raw beets. Meaning: you drink the juice and within literally minutes you are in the bathroom to go poo. And the affects can last quite a while! SO: to you and your readers, if you are going to juice beets be cautious, start slow, and make sure you are in a place where you can “go” if you need to! The color of your juice is spectacular!
